Photo Description:
To capture photographs in the style of Merrett I searched for decaying and discarded mechanical. What struck me about the machinery that I came across was how machines so strong and heavy looked lifeless, trapped and unwanted. They looked cast away and discarded with no care, looking sad and lost. The digger I came across with its torn seat and moulding paint work looked stuck in time. It had been there so long it had become part of its environment and the plant life was swamping and taking over. Colour within these photographs was highlighting the decay and destruction. Colour is extremely powerful in showing how the digger is fading and almost matching the tones of the environment it is in. The yellow and white paintwork that is used to protect the metal shell should be vibrant and vivid but it looks dull and is peeling away to leave a dull, earthy and rusted effect. I think colour is needed to create the emotive quality of death and decay which is not obvious in the black and white photograph. I feel within these shots that the colour photograph gives a stronger emotive response to the sense of decay and destruction. I feel colour is vital in appreciating the event that is occurring.
