Baha Mousa was an Iraqi man who died after being hooded and receiving 93 injuries whilst in British Army custody in Basra, Iraq in September 2003. I created this combination of protest and memorial, a string of bunting approximately thirty foot long, to ensure that his death and the cruel nature of it are not forgotten. Union Jack bunting is associated with with patriotism and support for the army and, in my mind, memory of the British Empire. All this is called into question by the shocking details of his death which cover this bunting. The Union Jack flag and army camouflage is juxtaposed against newspaper text about the killing, repeated use of a photo of Mousa with his family and a photo of Mousa dead. The photo shows the bunting installed in public on the South Bank in Central London, with Parliament in the background.
