intrusion
Photo Description:
This acrylic painting, ‘Intrusion’, was inspired by a crowded and claustrophobic visit to David Hockney’s ‘A Bigger Picture’. I loved Hockney’s pictures but felt jostled and hot and that my personal space was uncomfortably vulnerable. As I rushed for fresh air, I wanted to capture the unpleasantness of having so many people ruining what should have been an intensely personal experience. Back home I began with a picture I had taken of a crowd photographing the Empire State Building and placed it over a copy of one of Hockney’s paintings. The effect wasn’t as shocking as I wanted. So I then thought that the last place anyone would want to be watched by a crowd was your bed - a personal a space as precious as one’s experience of art. The image of Tracey Emin’s famous bed helped me with the composition of my painting of my own bed, on which I placed my glasses, a pair of dirty tights, a used makeup wipe and my history folder and book. I think I have managed to create a work which encapsulates a bundle of intense emotions.
