‘Crabbed age and youth’ is a mixed media piece resembling the human heart. The concept behind the piece was self-portrayal and identity. The heart shape is used as it is commonly associated with feelings and emotion; also it is a vital and central part of the body. The main form of the work is made up of many layers of fabric that have been worked into with heavy stitching and manipulated with a craft knife to reveal the hidden layers underneath. This suggests how memories, events and experiences are fused to us and form who we truly are. The raw, tattered edges and loose threads that hang from the piece expose imperfection and flaws and new segments have been stitched on top to cover the mistakes that are made in life. Fragments from vintage books were also added to the piece expressing the fears of growing up and the confusions of teenage life. The overall battered and threadbare look of the piece personifies the human heart as it goes through the ups and downs of life. Mixed Media, 43x65cm |
