In the late 1980's my large extendeed family migrated from the island of Trinidad to the UK. This is a portrait of my grandmother Ali, who in her youth, was an intergral part of Trindad's high society and participated in it's famous carnival countless times, leading a glamourous lifestyle. However she was involved in a near-fatal and disfiguring car crash and is now afflicted with diseases such as acromegaly. I have painted her as she looks now, in her small front room, but wearing a traditional Trinidadian carnival costume, a symbol of her past life and culutral heritage. |
