Juxtapositions

Juxtapositions
Photo Description:
Acrylic on canvas My starting point for this project was looking at patterns in nature, and this manifested itself in a series of photographs from around the school grounds. As my work progressed, I became more interested in geometric patterns in architecture, which eventually led me to look into Frank Stella’s paintings; huge linear boards painted using household brushes with nothing to regulate them but a steady hand- these pieces assume a very minimalist air. Building off this as inspiration, I decided to take a range of photographs from Oxford’s more interesting buildings. Having stripped these images down to their bare linear patterns, I produced a range of designs on which two patterns were overlaid. The design for this canvas is based on a set of stairs and the diagonal design of one of Oxford’s science laboratories on the Banbury Road. I decided to split the design between two canvases, which are opposite colours to fit the title of ‘Juxtaposition’. After having recreated the design on Photoshop and projected it onto the two canvases, I was then able to paint the design using masking tape and roller brushes- a task more painstaking than I had first envisaged.
