Breiðholt College was established in 1975 and was the first community college of its kind in Iceland. The college is divided into two schools: a normal dayschool for pupils who are between 16 and 20 or 21 years of age and an evening school for adults. In recent years, the number of students in the dayschool has been between 1300 and 1500 and between 800 and 900 in the evening school. The college is the biggest secondary school in Iceland with a staff of 120 teachers.
The pupils who enter the college at the age of 16 have completed 10 years of primary education with a final centralized state examination in Icelandic, English, Danish and mathematics and final school examinations in various other subjects. Final graduation from this college after four years, as well as other such colleges or secondary grammar schools in Iceland (stúdentspróf), is the basic entry requirement into the University of Iceland and it has also proved sufficient for universities and other institutes of higher learning both in Europe and USA.
Compared with the education system of the United States one could say that the first two years of Breiðholt College are similar to the last two years of Senior High’s in the US and that the final two years are similar to the first two years of college or university in the US.
In addition to preparing pupils for various academic studies at university level, this college offers qualifications in specialized branches of learning, Business Diploma (2 years), Licenced Practical Nursing (3 years), carpenter, electrician (3 years), and beautician (3 years), the last four being recognised and confirmed by the State. The Art department is very active and students graduating from the Art program are continuing their studies at respected Universities such as Chelsea Artschool in London and Gerrit Rietvel Academie in Holland.
Breiðholt College is run on the basis of a unit credit system whereby the pupils can, to some extent, organize the course of their studies for themselves. The courses in all subjects are numbered in the way that the first two numbers show the order of the course and the third number indicates the number of units gained for successful completion of the course. Thus English 102 is the first course in English, giving 2 units, and English 703 is the seventh course, giving 3 units. One unit is two class periods a week in one term. Normally the courses in all subjects have to be taken in the right order.
The academic year of the college is divided into two terms of 17 weeks, autumn term from 20th August until 20th December and spring term from January 4th until 20th May.
The college is run by the government of Iceland as are most colleges and secondary schools in Iceland. All education in Iceland is governed by the Secondary School Act passed by Parliament in 1996 and the national curriculum issued by the Ministry of Education.
