St. Gerard’s Educational Resource Centre is a special school, situated at the foot of the Black Mountain, in West Belfast. We cater for pupils with moderate learning difficulties. The Art Department seeks to provide a warm, supportive and happy environment, where children can have the freedom and confidence to explore their creativity to the full.
The Art Dept. provides a broad, balanced curriculum relevant to the pupils’ needs, which allows even the weakest child to contribute and give of his/her best.
Years 8-10 gain experience of drawing, painting, design, 3D work, printmaking, ceramics and textiles.
Years 11-12 incorporate these areas into their Creative Crafts exams, and GCSE .The Department also makes use of modern technology, using digital cameras, web-cam, and computers.
Exhibition and display plays an important role for St. Gerard’s artists: to this end, the children have become accustomed to having their work exhibited both within school and more widely in public centres in Belfast, and just recently in the Ulster Museum, as part of our Sharing Education Programme.
Every year St. Gerard’s displays a Nativity installation in the Hilton Hotel foyer, based on a particular artist / culture / (or both) and this year we will have a Nativity in the City Hall and the Hilton, for the public to view.
The Art Department has also worked closely with known artists and continues to partake in festivals, which the children enjoy very much.
