Reformation

Gangs are a reality in my life. I’ve been able to stay away from gangs myself but they have a huge impact on my community and the lives of everyone in it including myself.
I made these photos of a former gang member in my neighborhood. He’s covered with tattoos he received in prison for gang crimes and since he got out, he was permanently paralyzed in a gang shooting that left him in a wheelchair. The middle photo of my triptych shows best how I feel about the issue of gangs. He’s now reformed and has a completely different attitude, and wants to talk to high school students to keep them from making the same mistakes.
It’s a terrible thing and really messes up people’s lives, messes up our community, my neighborhood.
