‘Weight of Numbers’

At this historic economic moment in time we are all obsessed with numbers. This was my attempt to make a work which was dependent on an idea as subject rather than an object or thing. It was inspired by artists such as Marcel Duchamp and Jasper Johns. Johns of course was more famous for his paintings based on numbers. A number is an idea not a thing. What I did was to try to subvert this idea by making a physical sculpture which appeared to be very much a thing with weight and volume and form, but at the same time composing itself entirely out of numbers which are just concepts thus contradicting itself! The cushion appears to be taking weight and be solid, but it is in fact all very lightweight!
