Ipswich Academy About us
Our core values
All people are different
Clear requirements and challenging goals
Education is for life
Life is what you make it.
New ways of learning
We have developed a very exciting and new approach to learning which is designed to meet the varied and different needs of each individual student within the Academy.
We believe that all students are different and that they learn in different ways and at different rates.
The core curriculum of English, maths, Science, ICT and languages will be delivered using a specially developed ‘STEPS Curriculum´ where students will be encouraged to work at their own pace having set goals for them.
They will also benefit from a thematic, problem solving approach in other curriculum areas where they will develop the personal learning and thinking skills that will enable them to become successful learners at school but also throughout their lives.
We will also offer a full range of ex curricular provision including sport, the arts and activities such as The Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Organisation
We will organise our school into three smaller colleges; two lower school colleges (years7-9) and an upper college(years 10,11 ,12 and 13).
This will provide a smaller scale environment for every student and will allow students and teachers to get to know one another more quickly than in a traditional secondary school structure.
Within their college each student will belong to a base group of no more than 21 students.
The Base Group Tutor will have the responsibility to support and care for their students, to help them plan their programme of study and to help them achieve their goals.
Parents will receive regular updates from tutors on their child´s progress.
On-line with the Learning Portal
All the resources used by students and teachers are available on a website we call the ‘Learning Portal´.
Students, parents and staff will be able to access this from computers in the Academy, at home or anywhere with an internet link.
There will also be a regular reporting of progress electronically. Students and parents will have access to an on-line system so that they can check on their levels of progress in terms of assessments and comments made by the tutor and teachers.
Building on primary experience
Each student will ‘join´ the curriculum at a place suitable for them. Traditionally, the transition from Primary to High school has often resulted in students going backwards initially and covering work which they may have done before. We do not want this to happen.
We will work hard with parents and our primary schools to quickly assess the most suitable starting point for each student and then encourage them to set themselves some challenging goals
The personal tutorial
The students will meet their base group tutor every day and each week they will be given a 15 minute personal tutorial with their tutor to establish and then review their goals and their progress.
This tutorial will be recorded in the student logbook which is a very important part of their Academy experience.
The students will be expected to carry their logbook at all times and use it to record their goals, plans and learning tasks for the week. It will also be used for regular communication between parents, the base group tutor and subject teachers.
The Sixth Form and specialism
In September 2011 the Academy plans to open its own sixth form catering for about 150-200 students.
We will offer courses at all levels but particularly level 2 and 3 and we will concentrate on three main educational strands; Business and Enterprise, Sport and Creative Media
We will become a centre of Excellence for Business and Enterprise and we aim to provide all students with the opportunity to undertake internships within local businesses.
We have extensive international links in Sweden and New York but also India and South Africa and we wish our students to benefit from this by partaking in study tours, exchanges and focussed visits.
