Aldro School

Godalming / United Kingdom

Aldro School Aldro was founded in 1898 and is a leading boarding and day school for 220 boys between 7 and 13. It is set in 35 acres of unspoilt countryside in the village of Shackleford, within a mile of the A3 and 45 minutes from the centre of London, well placed for both Heathrow and Gatwick. It has achieved outstanding academic results and fine, modern facilities. A total of 57 scholarships have been won in the last four years, including academic awards at Charterhouse, Cranleigh, Eton, Radley, The RGS, Sherborne, Shrewsbury, Wellington and Winchester.
The Christian foundation is central to Aldro's ethos and the school has a caring family atmosphere. It is a place where boys can be boys: they are encouraged as individuals to develop their own potential in a range of areas both inside and outside the classroom and opportunities abound for them. Rugby, football, hockey, cricket, athletics and shooting are the main sporting activities but high standards are also achieved in squash, tennis, swimming, cross-country and judo. Boys enjoy their own gardens and for many, wide games and den-making in the surrounding woodland are a real highlight! There are Cubs, Scouts and a wide selection of activities including chess (seven national championship winning teams since 2004), fossil collecting, model railways and petanque. Music and drama flourish. Most boys learn an instrument or are members of one of three choirs. There are three orchestras, a jazz band, a wind band, a big band and many instrumental ensembles. There are major concerts and dramatic productions each term.
The art department offers double and triple lessons of art for all boys, every week, studying among other things drawing, painting, printing, textiles, sculpture and ceramics, as well as numerous opportunities for the boys to explore and develop their own creativity in junior and senior art clubs. In recent years boys have been awarded Art Scholarships to Charterhouse, Bradfield college, Harrow, Shiplake, Wellington and Lancing.
