Southbank is an international MYP (middle years program) and IB (international baccalaureate) school. The Diploma Programme for the visual arts is designed to offer students the opportunity to build on earlier experiences while supporting them to develop and use new skills, techniques and ideas. While it is possible to take the Diploma Programme visual arts course without previous experience, this would be helpful.
Initially pre-conceptions about the subject are challenged and students approach the fundamentals of art and design from new perspectives. Students keep investigation workbooks throughout the course, and great emphasis is placed on their ability to put their work and the work of other artist and designers into context, and on the development of their critical faculties. Students should also experiment and develop ideas and techniques for studio work through integrated contextual study and first-hand observations.
Students must maintain a high degree of self-motivation and commitment during the visual arts course.
