作品描述:
Ever since my childhood I have been surrounded by pixeled images. There are so many of them everywhere that they change ones perception of reality. When all of those images stick together in one film, a video - a digitalized piece of time - is created. I became curious, how is it possible to recreate a new reality on canvas, using this source.
I recorded the series of video-portraits, in which people were posing for me almost statically. The models were slightly shaking, blinking and moving their lips. The loss of stillness was imparting life to them and pushing them closer to me. That led me to think about artists and life-models roles. The border between the two was slipping away. I was in control over life-models time and private space as I was painting portraits. It could be compared to warm relationships between people. After I had played the video-film hundreds of times, I examined the person and fell in love with him/her.
In my portraits I wanted to try expressing peoples backbones through the video-life. I was wondering how this would be possible to achieve. Usually figurative artists draw linear borders of the model first. Then the borders assign volume and facial details. In my case, my digital life-model was moving; the borders of light were changing positions. Rather than ignoring their movements, I followed them, making my brush travel around the canvas. That is why instead of the realistic precision I have achieved intuitive blurriness. By looking at the bleary images it is very easy to recognize the painted people. Apparently the canvases have been enriched with the digital aura.
Acrylic on canvas, 16 canvases
This project comes together with the video (with all the same people on one screen in the same set) that is projected on the wall. (See in Video section "Control Over Life-Model part 2")
