I am an exciting and original artist who studied at Chelsea College of Art and Design for a year for my Foundation course, and then went on to complete a Fine Art degree at the University of East London.
I create colourful abstract paintings, which I would describe as bursts of energy, exploring new and exciting ways of applying paint. I find endless inspiration from the natural world, which infuses my imagination with vibrant colours and unique shapes.
The painting process for my abstract work is often quick, working mostly in oil I am able to produce large pieces within a few hours. I will have a rough idea of how I want a painting to look before I start, but once I stand in front of a canvas I feel like my mind is free and my hand is let loose to create a beautiful explosion of colour that is filled with emotion and drama.
On the other hand, I have a great eye for intricate detail and can produce high quality observational work, specializing in portraits of people and animals. Through my animal portraits in particular, I hope to celebrate their unique and individual qualities. In doing so, I feel I am contributing towards making people more aware of all the amazing creatures that live on our planet with us.
Through my love for animals and my portraits, I have become fascinated by the similarities between people and animals and the profound relationship that can exist. This interest has led me to create paintings such as Lioness, 2006/07 and The Darker Side, 2007 whereby I literally painted half a human face and half an animal face. For Lioness, one half is a female’s face and the other a male lion’s and for The Darker Side I painted half man, half black panther. By combining the animal and human forms, I believe I have created something new and unexpected, something that is neither one thing nor the other, but both. Not only do I want to capture the physical resemblance between the two but I want open up the deeper meaning behind why people feel they are like certain animals, I want people to discover their wild side whilst challenging them to recognize what man shares with the animal kingdom.
Titles play a considerable role in my work, especially with regard to my half man/half animal paintings, they are not always as simple as the name of an animal or person, for instance Lioness is a play on words and gender. Instead, they act as the beginning of a narrative, to grab hold of your imagination and entice you to contemplate my work.
