A transect is a path along which one records and/or counts occurrences of the phenomenon of study. It can be a record of the markers or perceptions of place—the sequential experiences of travel, from rural and semi-rural hinterlands to complex urban environments. This work by Sue Beyer, relates to our need to organise and clarify space and to define space by way of ownership, signified by the use of cadastral base maps.
The overlay of cadastral bases, the transect from Upper Coomera to the Broadwater, represents the various types and densities of land uses, and by inference, the environments and experiences found in these locations as one travels from the mountains to the sea. The relationships established between the line-work of the various cadastral layers signifies the harmony and discordance one experiences in cities; the beauty of ‘fit’ in the genius loci and conversely conflict of competing uses. This in turn represents the drive to create order, serenity and comfort within the maelstrom of modern urban life. |
