This picture comes from my project 'My Family Album' currently on exhibition in Singapore.
The project looks at how we create cultural identity. I shot real life situations and make them look staged. Growing up i was unable to fully connect with the world around, I was repetively struck by how bizare our everyday rituals really are. Small gestures such as plucking our eyebrows to grand wedding cermonies; for me all of life was embedded in the surreal. At Goldsmiths this way of thinking became academic. I saw my crazy thoughts echoed back at me from anthropolgists.
However when I look in a mirror and see the now faint lines on my face they remind me, in the same way as the death of someone close, that life is real. That life isn’t a game, that life hurts and when it does you need family around you. The project tries to reconcile contrasting modes of perception thinking versus feeling. Connection versus disconnection. Comedy versus tragedy. |
