“Vontrapped†2005 is a work created for a solo exhibition as part of the Crosby Homes Manchester City Art Prize at Manchester city Art Gallery. Melvin recreates a scene from The Sound of Music in which the Von Trapp children introduce themselves to their governess Maria, played by Julie Andrews. He meticulously edits the video footage, repeating the amateur actors’ movements forward and in reverse. He isolates and manipulates their minimal gestures and the resulting ambient sounds. The scene is mirrored on a second TV monitor so the performers are literally trapped in an edited loop unable to escape the endless cycle, imposed on them by the process involved. |
