Nicola Jell 
Kingston University, Fine Art

Nicola Jell adopts a whimsical approach to her work, exploring her most poignant memories and the way they influence our adult decisions. This in turn provokes the audience to interact with the work by considering personal memories from their childhood. The artist is intrigued by the past and therefore feels compelled to reminisce and create visible connections between her experiences. She uses generic symbols and objects from childhood, which many can relate to, evoking a sense of nostalgia within the audience. Her current work seeks to challenge the sense of loss she associates with found objects and she uses her intuition to create a sense of history and belonging within each entity. The outcome of each piece of work is dependant on the artist's feelings towards each personal memory she associates with the found object, thus displaying her conception that poignant childhood memories influences who we are as adults. Jell's work takes on a sculptural form, making use of old, unwanted found objects. She sources objects that are of no use to their owners, through 'freecycle', car boot sales, skips and Ebay.
