Steven Harrison
Edinburgh College Of Art, Drawing And Painting
My work is a shameless celebration of the humour and irony of everyday life, absorbing influences from all facets of pop culture, twisting meanings and creating jokes from the most mundane material. Embracing the idea of the 'crap aesthetic' I work with cheap, throwaway and reclaimed surfaces that further serve to mock the pop-culture content of my written work.
I choose to work with text because text allows me to be direct and brash in ways I could not achieve with purely visual imagery and allows me to communicate my ideas clearly to the audience. I believe the democratising effect of text, the clear message conveyed to all when read is a worthy achievement in itself. Rather than trying to bury ideas in esoteric symbols and abstract subtleties, I choose to proudly flaunt my ideas on the surface, joking with the viewer and denying the vain spectre of Art all reverence.
