These drawings attempt to suspend the viewer in a projective paradox where the rules of perspective, shadow and reflection are uncomfortably situated to produce individual projective spaces which nonetheless conform strictly to the rules governing each convention. The later drawings use a perspectival scene that also invokes diametric rules. For instance, reflection and shadow project diametrically, even within a perspectival space. A number of projective techniques are used to represent three-dimensional space. Diametric projections model the face and depth of an object without distortion. Perspectival projections (ranging from Piero della Francesca’s first and second method to Brook Taylor’s innovative technique) depict an object’s depth receding from its face.

I really like squid, especially giant squid. Have you seen the one recently captured by a Japanese research team? |

Piero della Francesca and South Park. I think these two are kindred spirits. There is a mutual love of front and side elevation. in both cases, this comes following that availability of perspectival, modeled space being available to each. In fact, Piero was a big contributor to the science of perspective and probably invented the first method for projecting plan and section into perspectival space. Yet, he really loved the front and side elevation. Likewise, South Park follows the Simpsons and countless other animated series who seem to have mastered 3-dimensional possibilities, and yet the simplicity and directness of flat, layered space is somehow richer and more suggestive. |
