Melissa Hoesman Johnson
2005 Grad University Of Tennessee, B.A. Painting, Drawing/ Art History
My senior thesis at U.T. was a presentation on the artist Phillip Guston and his late work (1967-1980). I read numerous articles about his work written by art critics and curators over several decades, which were printed in the New York Times and other prestigious papers (1940's-1980). With the articles I followed the changes in his work and realized how manipulative criticism is to an artist- esp in New York. The harsh criticism lead Guston away from the New York art world, into seclusion in Woodstock New York where his truly personal work flourished- inspired by the New Left and the "revolutionary" music of Bob Dylan, and the Woodstock Music Festival.=====
My latest 4 paintings are images taken from old Life Magazines and published photos from the 60's. I am interested in this era and the mind-set people had, the influence of McCarthyism and how these codes- as I like to think of them- still guide our minds today. I place collage in my paintings to expose the thoughts of the subjects, what people might be thinking but don't always say--- giving thoughts a space to be seen by others goes against the anti-revolutionary efforts of strict social conformities and religious influences that I think were subtly emplemented during the Cold War.
