I work extensively with colour. I describe myself as a painter due to my use of colour; using colour in a complex and articulate way is a goal I set myself. I regard painting as an intellectual pursuit, and the process of moulding a painted surface as a continual act of problem solving. My work is informed by the teachings of Hans Hofmann. Hofmann advocated empathy in painting: proceeding theory and method comes empathy. Informed by his teachings I do not allow my empathetic sensibilites to become restricted by theory and method, but rather use them as a tool to facilitate painting in a direct and unequivocal manner. This way the work manifest imagery which is unique and unexpected.
