C.W.POST Of LIU, MFA Painting
I have lived in the cultural area of the Orient and while growing up I have been influenced by the surroundings of this culture and all the while working in a Western art style. This influence is derived from visits to temple with my family since I was a child because parents and my family’s religion is Buddhist. Much of the foundations of Oriental art come from Buddhist art. Almost all Oriental art is closely connected Buddhist art, even landscapes use backgrounds found in Buddhist art. I have been studying simultaneously the Oriental landscape, calligraphy, and Western painting. This is because I can feel the power [force] of a brush stroke of these combined styles.
My early artworks’ subject was the Buddhist image. After a while I started to exclude Buddhist images. I began to explore the landscape as subject matter in order to break away form religious themes. This is because I was looking for new subject for my works. When I worked on my paintings about Buddhist themes, I had to express this using a diversity of colors but, I felt that many times the colors became to dark. In the beginning I had a difficult time expressing the beautiful natural colors I found in the landscape. I am trying to achieve the similar type of color palette found ...
