My work investigates the phenomenological value of painting. Specifically the work explores relationships between natural spatio-temporal experience and the space experienced through the illusionary surface of a painting.
Spatial awareness, in a phenomenological context, is determined by the correlation of all the senses, and by the body’s ability to explore its environment. Paintings in this respect provide a complex visual language that can articulate a sensuous interpretation of this explored space. My work seeks to extend and further interrogate the phenomenological experience of both the painted space and actual space.
I have produced three videos. The first is aesthetically influenced by the work of 16th Century Dutch floral painters; Rachel Ruysch and Jan Davidsz. De Heem. The second by the Spanish painter Juan Sanchez Cotan, and the third by the Italian painter Giorgio Morandi.
I hope to create an unfamiliar phenomenological experience, using both sound and vision to stimulate spatial awareness. The inter-play between both senses is fundamental to achieving a sense of disembodiment, and in making a connection between the real, and the illusionistic.
