Before coming to college my work was concerned with spirituality. I follow a Sufi path which involves purification of the self in order to uncover the Divine essence
I am interested in how the display of internal body organs has a sobering effect on us. I have been working spontaneously and intuitively transforming found objects and detritus into body parts. As one of my tutors put it, I’m exploring “the elegant flip flop from the category of material to the category of the body.” The work has more to do with feeling than idea. I experiment in search of the gut response which indicates I’m on the right track.
Being confronted with body parts compels one to empathise, it could be with the humour or the pathos of the plight of the individual as he or she she struggles towards achieving a resolution or a state of completion.
