My current 'Inanimated' series is about how we reflect upon world and/or personal issues, whilst staring at or working with dull, lifeless objects. Its about our society’s obsession with commodities; that lifeless objects can give us emotional satisfaction, and ‘suburban’ forms and lifestyles may numb us against the horrors of the 21st century (as well as all the crap that white man has instigated throughout history).
By distorting my pictures using Photoshop software, I hope to give these inanimate objects some life and emotion, thus transforming these everyday objects into idols; adored by the West, and now grasped by the East. We believe they are our basic necessities, and that we are nothing without them. The whole world can go and get stuffed for all I care - at least I have my toothbrush and my teeth are clean!
I've always admired Vincent Van Gogh's painting because he was a passionate painter, in tune with the emotional undertones of the suffocating Dutch society in which he lived, and he was brave enough to capture the expression.
I like Andy Warhol too since he made whimsical statements about idolisation as well. |
