| Mark Grieve |
| |
My name is Mark Grieve. I'm a Canadian-born sculptor (1965) whose latest series uses junk bicycle parts as a medium. My approach to public art recognizes patterns and rhythms. By repeating patterns, dynamic visual expressions can be attained. By turning the rhythm “on its head,” so to speak, new dynamic visual rhythms can meet a wide variety of special design needs. Also, whimsical, strangely happy effects are created.
My partner/fabricator Ilana Spector and I were recommended artists for Ventura’s temporary art program. “Wheel Arch” was so warmly received it prompted a local letter-writing campaign to make the sculpture permanent. We also have worked with the City of San Rafael (whose public art program Grieve helped to develop) and in Los Angeles, in conjunction with the Los Angeles Bike Coalition.
Before working in metal, I worked in a variety of mediums including lumber, rice paper, fabric, and papier Mache. Together with Spector, we hosted “THE PIG,” an elegant dinner extravaganza in the Black Rock Desert, and Grieve has built other site-specific and temporary works designed to burn previously.
In 2005 and 2006 I was asked to lead the “Temple” project at Burning Man. There, I was able to skillfully orchestrate 130 volunteers of all different skill levels and trades, to meet a two-week deadline, and to produce sculptures that needed to be visually dynamic and needed to seat at least 200. Highly interactive and built under intense weather conditions, the scale of these works were 150 feet long, by 70 feet wide, by 55 feet at their pinnacles.
Grieve has been a carpenter/builder for 25 years in the Bay Area and Spector, a lawyer and former president of a Solar Electric company. Having worked with many building departments in the past, we understand deadlines related to client relationships. As we have learned, any job requires a team of professionals to complete the task in a timely and professional manner.

| 关于此艺术家 |
I have always felt that the creative process was one of those life-long achievements, like learning to play golf. As an artist, you take on Rembrandt, Michelangelo and all of art history as your teachers/mentors. You ask yourself, “Why this path?”.... But there is a joy that occurs when everything lines up just right. When all the factors come together and you can look at your creative efforts and truthfully say to yourself, “I did that right” – a poem, a dance, whatever -that is what gives me purpose and assurance I am contributing. |
