Born in 1945, I grew up in a small town in Northern Iowa, played football, coached the swimming team, and graduated from the University of Iowa with a BA in printmaking studying under Mauricio Lasansky. I then went into the Army and ended up pulling 13 months in Korea on the DMZ. Coming out of Korea I entered UCLA and earned a MA and MFA in printmaking while studying under Jan Stussy and Stanton Mac-Donald Wright. The next year after the funds dried up on my Fulbright Award to Portugal, because of the Angola War, I was lucky to get hired by USC where I taught printmaking as a junior faculty member. I also replaced professors at UCLA when they went on sabaticals, and taught one year at Pierce College. In 1977 I tried Real Estate, you know just for the summer, but by fall I had purchased Century 21 Hollywood Inc. and had a new vocation going. Now 31 years into real estate, I'm coming full circle and starting to paint little quick studies 9X12. I'm using just 1/2 inch brushes and 5 colors. I intentionally limit my time to 2 hours after which I stop and throw something away, or keep it. The fun for me is that these little studies can be scaned on my office FAX machine and e-mailed to my daughter in Long Beach, who is my best critic. She sends me her paintings as well, so we have great talks.

Blue Moon Over Laguna Beach
2008 Acrylic on Canvas 31X31 |
|
Started on really cold and windy night just after the sun went down, then this blue moon came up and I was just held in a trance feeling how peaceful things could be in our world which was created so perfectly.

Jalisco Jungle River
2008 Acrylic on Board 28X36 |
|
It was actually painted on a floating piece of board that was coming down the river as we were anchored in San Blas Mexico. The paints were what ever I found in the boat locker. The grays are white paint mixed with the charcoal we were using to Bar-B-Que the giant prawns we traded a baseball cap for. The brush was and old toothbrush in the tool locker. The clouds were a spoof on all the crocs we had seen in the river that aternoon. |
Picnic on the Lake

|
Painted from an old 35mm slide I took in the 80's of when my kids and I decided to do a spoof on Manet down at 5 Island Lake, Emmetsburg Iowa.

Costa Rica Sunset
2007 Acrylic on Canvas 22X31 |
|
Quick Acrylic sketch here deep in the heat of the Costa Rica Savana. I could hardly finish in 10 min. with what I had to use here before the Sun went down and we got some blessed relief from the heat.

Laguna Shores at Night
2007 Acrylic on Canvas 28X36 |
|
High above the Pacific Ocean looking down over the shores, I wanted to capture the freeway lights coming up from San Diego and the wet sand in front of the hotels on the beach. |

Maria on Animal Sheets
1981 Charcoal on Arches Paper 112X56 |
|
Charcoal study done in 1 hour class. My camera broke and the drawing is so big it took me 22 scans to get this much. My photo merge took so much memory I thought it would chook. Not all the lines line up, but you can get the idea.

Peggy & Ed

Ferndale Creek
2009 Acrylic on Canvas 66X66 |
|
I finally got so frustrated that I took the canvas up to the creek to finish it, the whole thing became a study in abstractions rather than the way I thought it would go. I have way too many hours into such a small canvas, with just a lot of squinting and backing up to finish. |
2 Marlin a Blue and a Stiper
2009 Acrylic Sketch on Paper 29X17 |
|
Acrylic on Paper: This will be used to promote sport fishing at CYC this summer. |
Maria in Her Chair
2009 Pen and Ink Sketch Hit With Water Color 31x23 |
|
I wanted to get a quick look at how she tilted her head and was kind of looking down at me amused at my struggles. |
Peggys Cove
2009 Pen and Ink Sketch Hit With Water Color 36X24 |
|
Maybe 1 hour with a very unforgiving medium as the evening fog rolled in and frostbite set in. I may try this later as I have a ton of photos. What a neat place on the edge of Nova Scotia.

Self Portrait in my Kitchen
2009 Pen & Ink on Water Color Paper 36X27 |
|
6:00 AM in my Kitchen. It started simply enough. It was going to be a cartoon like Jazzy's. Then it got reflective and very sad, kind of like real estate and the economy. Dangerous to put a mirror infront of me now when I have a sharpie pen. |
El Pescador Beach Storm Comin In
2009 Acrylic on Canvas 19.8X26.4 |
|
Quick 45 minutes sketch before the winds came in and blew sand all over everything. This was my first plein air outing this summer and I was please to see summer colors again, I will probably go back to this later & larger. I was surprised to see how close Catalina Island appeared, as it's 18 miles away at this point, but that was how it was as the storm came in. |
Water Lilly Bed
2009 Acrylic on Canvas 9X12 |
|
I grew up on this lake in Emmetsburg, Iowa watching these Lotus flowers and now back for a visit, I decided to try and capture the differing layers within this subject. First are the floating pads on the surface, then the fluttering pads hanging from the stalks, the heavy shadows under these hanging pad, lotus blossoms themselves, and finally all the reflections and ripples in the lake surface. Lots to look at in only an hour quick study. This kind of works from about 8 foot away, so I am encouraged. Of course I have much grander ideas like incorporating the thousand of fire fly that I saw here last night. But we will see if it gets the better of me, since I have some time now to really study this scene. |
Ingham Lake Curve
2009 Acrylic Sketch On Canvas 30X30 |
|
I painted on this for 4 days trying to get the colors right. At one time I even had geese crossing the road, and a yellow line, but gave that up. |
Forest Light
2007 Acrylic Sketch On Canvas 36X28 |
|
Walking up through Laurel Canyon my partner and I came across this stunning light blue light streaming through the fall colors. It was shortly after sunset so maybe it was the fog creeping into the forest. We could never quite figure it out. I kept going back to her white coat for a referance point, but this is how it really looked. |
