Kim Rodeffer Funk

About the Artist

I enjoy mixed medium works along with pure acrylic paintings, mainly on canvas. I find working on a larger scale is freeing for me, yet smaller pieces present excellent challenges from time to time.

I have been fortunate to be able to move around the United States and Europe over the last 25 years, and my travels have greatly influenced my work. I find a great deal of creativity in travel and learning about new cultures. I find creative sparks in many ways, such as nature, literature, travel, music, art supplies, found objects, textiles, architectural materials and even in natural and personal disasters. Just about every thing and every experience is up for grabs where my creativity is concerned.

Participatory art is very important to me, therefore, I sign my paintings on the side rather than the front. In this way, the painting's orientation is not dictated by me but by the purchaser. I am very willing to discuss my experiences with each work, but the ultimate hanging decision is the client's.

Like Plato, I wish for my art to provide a place of peaceful contemplation for the viewer. I know from experience this is not always the case, since we all see the world through different lenses. My greatest wish is for you to enjoy the view.

Contemplation 9 (Considering Pearls)

2008
111.5 x 76.5

This painting considers the classics in modern life. It is a romantic view of the speed in which we live.

Contemplation 5 (Concentration)

2007
111.5 x 76.5

Representing the meandering mind running through a structured life. The feeling of being bound within the world and concentrating to break free only to be confined again.

Fly Away

2008
111.5 x 76.5

Soaring into the life we are to be leading in a creative and free way.

Horizon 1

2006
acrylic and oil on staple-less gallery wrapped canvas
111.5 x 76.5

This series began when I lived in England and became enthralled with the horizons there. The colors were amazing so capturing the feelings from those experiences started with this piece.

Horizon 3

2006
acrylic and oil on staple-less gallery wrapped canvas
111.5 x 76.5

The sun set over the English Channel coast from Normandy, France was mesmerizing. I found the light quickly dimmed and the sky and sea darkened with the faintest glimmer of the most intense light on the horizon just the moment the sun fell to be a very emotional experience

Horizon 4

2006
acrylic and oil on staple-less gallery wrapped canvas
111.5 x 76.5

Storms on the sea, in the summer, can be both beautiful and violent. They are truly a clash of sky and sea. Is it brutal? Maybe. To be very sure, it is change. This is a change in the future on the horizon.

Horizon 6

2006
acrylics on staple-less, gallery wrapped canvas
111.5 x 76.5

A new experience on the horizon. As I soared into the sky, it was the horizon which pulled me in the new direction. A trip to a place I had never been before. The play of light seemed to be dancing in anticipation of my arrival.

Horizon 12 (Dancing in the Night)

2008
acrylics on staple-less, gallery wrapped canvas
111.5 x 76.5

On a moonless night, the play of a light in the hand creates the most amazing images. It makes you want to dance with joy.

Simple Contemplation

2008
acrylics on staple-less, gallery wrapped canvas
76.5 x 111.5

This painting of many layer of glazing creates a depth worthy of complete contemplation. I was drawn in by calm seas and blue, cloudless skies.

Phases of Life

2008
acrylics on staple-less, gallery wrapped canvas
five 30.5 x 10.2

Phases of Life
This series of small canvases combine to make another small work. The gradation of hues and the choice of reflective paints come together representing growth throughout life.

Contemplation 6 (Swirling fog)

2006
acrylics on staple-less, gallery wrapped canvas
30.5 x 30.5

Fog arrives over the sea closing out the little light proceeding it.

Horizon 11 (Pondering the Light)

2008
acrylics on staple-less, gallery wrapped canvas
61 x 76.2

As fading light settles into the night sky, the horizon is lost. This work is glazed heavily with clear gloss.

Horizon 13 (Live Wire)

2008
acrylics on staple-less, gallery wrapped canvas
30.5 x 61

Electric storms are on the horizon sharing their energy with the world. The "wires" are silver and copper acrylic paint. This painting has many layers of clear, gloss glaze.

Education and biography
My education is in interior design, a field I have worked in on and off over the last 28 years. My area of expertise is in pediatric health care and other environments for children and those who support them. I have and still am an interior design tutor.

Painting became an extension of interior design and now it is my profession. I view the world in an abstract way and feel the emotions of my life are expressed in my art.
