| Sanatan Saraswati |
| |
Born 1951, Worthing, England.
Moved to Australia soon after.
In my late 20s everything in life started to become pretty meaningless, including my art. By my early 30s I had found some direction in life and spent almost 10 years living in an ashram. When the time came to leave not only had this influenced my outlook on life, it gave a new and constantly evolving direction to my art.

| About the Artist |
Much of my art embraces tantric symbolism: balance of energies; juxtaposition of inner and outer worlds; interconnection of everything in life.
Most are acrylic pieces, with many done on re-cycled aluminium printing plates. Not only is this an excellent medium, taking the paint in as close to permanent way as I have found, it adds to the metaphorical play between physical and mental constructs.
Most recently I have tended to eliminate or obscure the recognisable in my art. I wish to produce art that is alive, that is to be with, more than to provoke thought. |

Self-portrait at sunset
84x67 |
|
A play on the visual depiction of the inner and outer: the sky (consciousness) is full with the colours of sunset forming into a star. Another star, interlocking the two triangles of mind and matter, only manages to raise itself from the surface as an embossed version, a ripple on the surface. The larger star is forming within consciousness, loosely made from interlocking pieces of Shiva/Shakti triangles. An attempt has been made to manifest into something more concrete, to hold these symbols of the self together with large bolts. Yet even these have one screw 'loose'. |
Gwydir
acrylic 84x67 |
|
An impressionistic piece depicting surface reflection on a river in inland Australia. The symbology is simply the isometric grid (interconnectedness), reflection (intentional pun) and serenity. |
Open Heart
68x85 |
|
Simply my interpretation of the symbol for the heart chakra, anahata, which is the union of consciousness and energy, Shiva and Shakti triangles, forming a six-pointed star. However, I have played with the visual planes, pushing the heart out from the background, with a further 'opening' at the centre.
There is a further visual play that is only visible when viewing the original. The whole aluminium plate on which this is painted is lightly beaten. |
Satellite Dreaming
67x84 |
|
Much of this is a play with threes. An inner landscape, viewed from above, with three satellites (double tetrahedrons) between the observer and the surface.
On the surface, landforms loosely depicting three curves and a dot (Aum).
Much of this integrates symbolic concepts from aboriginal art with that from other cultures. |
Yantra Forming
2008 acrylic on aluminium 42 x 62 |
|
Overlaid brushstrokes of varying transparency bringing forth an earth yantra. |
Why Turn
2008 acrylic on aluminium 67x84 |
|
The questioning, judging mind is so close to us every waking moment that we think this is our self. We identify with our thoughts. Being with nature is one way to turn this off, even if only temporarily. |
The Bathers
2009 acrylic on canvas 92x133 |
|
This piece has very little for the mind to find meaning in. There is a garden of colourful unknowns to be wandered through, enjoyed and played in. |
