Vanessa Losada

About the Artist

My artwork is based on the deconstruction of identity through memory, tradition, cultural and social structures. I have focused on the construction of female identity, nevertheless this analysis of identity construction can be applied to other spheres.
The fragmentary character of identity is the creative key that leads my work and develops it in different directions.

According to this, three elements articulate my conceptual, critical creative discourse: Clothes (and of course Fashion), sewing and collage.

Clothes, understood in many ways: It is a cultural object that delimits the inside and the outside, the body and the context in which it is confined. The costume is a fragile structure, easy to deconstruct and dismantle; it is a cultural representation that establishes the differences between men and women, the visible and hidden, morality and licentiousness. It is a pattern that classifies, arranges and maintains a hierarchical structure; it alienates and it represents the signs of belonging.
It functions not only as social/cultural structure but it is, in its self, a structure or “pattern” due to its technical process of construction and production: An object made out of fragments of “patterns”.

A collage is the creation of a reality out of fragments of another reality, it is a simple technique that re-interprets different realities in a subjective manner. Through the deconstruction of a certain structure it is possible to construct new structures.
It is connected to sewing by means of its composition scheme of doing and re-doing, joining pieces together, patchwork and darning.
They all together make up the thread that stitches my work together, revealing, therefore, the logic and assumptions of tradition.
Far from trying to find solutions, through the use of contradictions and comparisons, I reflect on the impossibility of establishing a meaning. As a result, personal and cultural identity can be understood as a movable unit.
