Charles Binns

关于此艺术家

I am an enthusiastic lomographer, using Holga cameras and a lomo lca to photograph landscapes of England (and beyond). Film, whether black & white or colour, captures detail and interprets light in a way that the more sophisticated digital camera cannot. The beauty of the Holga is that, having only one shutter speed and aperture, the only control the photographer has is over the choice of film and (most importantly of all) framing the subject matter. All the photographer's efforts are therefore focussed on the image itself with no other technical distractions.

My inspiration comes from the landscape artists of the 18th and 19th century who documented changing rural landscapes. So my photographs aim to document an England that has been changed by a modernising world.

Man's influence on our landscapes have been enormous - indeed only the coast of Britain is not man made. My photographs hark back to a romantic idyll of rural scenes that once were, but always with details of contemporary life - be it a power line crossing the countryside or some idle farm machinery.

The New River at Broxbourne

2009

The New River brings drinking water to Londoners. Neither or river nor new; it is a man made canal built in the 17th century. This photograph was taken during the recent snow fall

Iron Gate in Bayford

2009

An old gate just outside Bayford village. Taken just after the recent snowfall.

The entrance to Broxbourne Parish Church

2009

The view from the door of St Augustine's church looking towards Churchfields as people wander past enjoying the winter landscape that has liberated them from work for the day

The River Lea on a frosty Sunday morning

2008

A solitary rower trains on the River Lea on a bright, cold Sunday morning

Discarded Tyres

2008

Old tyres dumped near a railway line, covered in frost

Admirals Walk Lake

2008

Early morning at Admirals Walk Lake, part of the Lee Valley Nature Reserve. Taken on a frosty December morning as day slowly dawned.

Admirals Walk Lake 2.

2008

Another view across the reservoir early the same morning.

2009

A canal boat moored outside the lock keepers cottage at Dobbs Lock in Hertfordshire. The sunlight illuminates the bow of the boat showing off it's rust and peeling paint.
