|
Karolien Soete was born in Roeselare, Flanders in 1973 as the scion of an artistic family.
Her expertise, coupled with a special gift for identifying with her subjects,
results in the creation of miraculous portraits that reflect not only a striking physical likeness
but great depth, dimension and introspective subtlety.
For the last ten years, Karolien has focused her creative energies into developing her skill as
a portraitist and visionary into the tender, insightful world of human character. Using a technique of her
own invention - oil paint and mixed media on varnished Japanese paper, mounted on wood -
her work can be found today throughout Europe and the United States.Gifted with a rich and diverse
repertoire of classical talents and skills, Karolien holds a master degree in historical graphic techniques.
from St. Luke Academy of Art in Ghent. Additionally, she has studied stone and clay work, photography,
architecture, voice, and is fluent in computer design and animation.
Professionally Karolien has been art director for motion pictures, sung opera in film, and vocalized Brahms in concert.
Her favorite medium however, remains the drawing and painting of authentic portraits.

“why am I so fascinated with OLD photographs ?
A photograph is a person captured,
a little fragment of that person’s life, there, forever to be looked at. And my search for pictures leads me to people who are forgotten, hidden away from society. Their pictures where taken only to serve as documents, to classify them in archives of mental institutions or prisons. No chance to find those persons in family albums or to hear relatives tell their stories. The pictures I choose are the ones hidden in dusty libraries, catalogued under patient files or as case studies in medical dictionaries.
When I look at those pictures they tell me a life story, they are faces trying to tell me something, faces distorted or in pain crying out for someone to listen, although their voices have long ago been silenced. The pictures from the early 1900’s show people as they are on that moment, there was neither time nor intention to stage them, no mirror check nor request for a fake smile. They show the individuals really and truthfully, they reveal their emotions - they had nothing to gain or lose. That’s the true beauty I believe. We are allowed to see their core.
When I look, study or paint them, I try to hear their voices, to listen to them, and I want to allow them to share through my paintings the things they never told. I try to give them a voice, their past lives in silence hidden away. I endeavour to bring back and place them in a room where they can be viewed. I want to honor their existence and beauty, to place them in clear view for everyone to see; their lives open to be read, their emotions on view.
