My technique is oil on canvas and I paint with my fingers using brush only for details. I paint for about twenty years and I have some 150 paintings.
Following text was written by Croatian art critic prof. Nada Fiskovic:
"Surrelistic poetics by Zrinko Hatvalic

The spirit of Surrealism which is in nowadays almost unattended among other tendencies in painting, represents heritage which only a few painters occasionally use in their aspiration for achieving surreal vision in their deepest conscience. That kind of abreaction to hidden perception and also aspiration for reaching spontaneity which rises from lyrical sites of childhood puts Zrinko Hatvalic with other surrealism painters.
It is all about a man who lives his dream through painting for about twenty years by setting his own ways which almost accidentally came in contact with the movement from twenty`s of the last century.
While expressing himself he uses specific way of work. By approaching to blank canvas without any pattern or rough draft he intervenes with his fingers dipped directly into the paint, instead of brush or small shovel.
By his treatment and imagination of sculptor he shapes his forms on two dimensional surface while surrendering himself to some delirious game. By declining contact with experiences of his own time, he also neglects conventional techniques in painting and like being in some kind of trance without any restrictions he builds his composition of extraordinary beauty. Like a surgeon he affects the essence of the matter, offering directly to his viewers to see what he has found in his self-reliant, creative play. Like some kind of probe he enters the internal sphere of his subject while showing layers of his vision and surrendering himself to touching the matters with art of painting like a result.
In these pictures one can see the world that is real only by painters perspective. He submits himself to wandering in dream and on his own way he wants to oppose general estrangement of human being.
Sometimes he wants to say so much at once because being ceded to his remembrance and imagination he meets multi-layered associations which press him down and he crams them into the painting by using extended perspective. There are moments when these associations suppress him by pushing on in great number and that´s when composition of the painting fills up to saturation. Not all motifs are painted from the same point of view and that´s what brings in caleidoscop of painters perspective.
While travelling the world on the margin of consciousness, the painter allows himself spiritual adventure in which he drags observers also by capturing them into trap of his unforeseeable world.
By rambling trough paths leading to unexpected, he seeks for some other worlds full of surprises, bizareness, hallucination – briefly told he seeks for other dimension which could be named surrealistic imagination.
That is area in which there is no control, limits, restraint or conditional quality – there is only freedom of movement toward amazing sphere in which liberty of dream dominates."
