| About the Artist |
In the past, my work has been about the city, industrial landscape and the (in)visibility of infrastructure. I photographed the things that go unnoticed: rubbish bins at tourist destinations, scaffolding holding up national treasures, and the power lines that clutter the skyline.
For my last body of work, I photographed significant places that have been endangered in London’s troubled past. Politically charged sites, landmarks that have been damaged through wear or nature, targets of terrorism, locations of fire and epidemic were the focus in this project. Assuming that photographs, particularly postcards, are “of” something, I digitally removed what the photograph is “of”. As there are elements present such as bridges, buildings and the river Thames, the images exist within specific landscapes. Whether or not people are immediately aware, there are clues as to where they are. As a photographer, I find it appealing to play with the idea of reality, and the notion that a photograph is truthful. I wanted these images to be subtly deconstructive. The images that I created through careful editing conceal a second image, (the original image that has had elements covered up digitally,) and at the same time, they reveal a history of the place, which is made “real” by my hand. They also have relevance in today’s political climate of terrorism and cultural homogenisation.
I have embarked on a new project of the borderlands between civilisation and wasteland, and areas of gentrification that pose a threat to human life. This series is titled Decommission. Already having shot images in the UK, Japan, China, Arizona, California and the San Francisco Bay area, my most recent focus has been a decommissioned naval base in California that is rife with radionuclides and heavy metals. This area has a higher degree of illness in children than anywhere in the Bay Area, and is home to many superfund sites, decommissioned power plants, the municipal dump, and high-density, low-income housing. I continue to visit it document the area as it changes and develops.
