关于此艺术家

artist statements:

my concern in recent years has been to create drawings with an interior space.

working in layers of paper allows me to create a surface and in addition to this visible area to suggest a hidden, invisible area. what is not seen, what doesn't have identity is somehow infinite. or so one would like to believe.

some of these works have marks that create the illusion of depth and at the same time emphasize the flatness of the paper. these fragmented, ambivalent marks cover what is not seen like luminous pelt.

one is always trying to get to the other side of what is perceived.

fragmenting the image in different surfaces makes the illusory space more precarious, a mere congregation, but also -because of the volume- the image becomes more tangible, more present.

fragmenting the image in different surfaces also suggests the image as an optical illusion, a mental construction. the marks are the alphabet, the image is a word.

working on these pieces is a sort of refutation.

if the world is an idea objects are books.

my most recent works are constructions made with found pieces of paper, most of it refuse. these are compact drawings that are meant to be held in the hand. some of these structures -buildings, artifacts, heads, fetishes- involve drawn images. other are closed to the world in their own delight.

some approximate descriptions of the recent work:
darkness wrapped up in beautiful colors
darkness wrapped up in transient colors
darkness wrapped up in found colors
darkness disassembled darkness disarmed
darkness collected
darkness wound very tightly and made powerful transistors

i found this quote of maurice merleau-ponty in a monograph on philip guston by robert storr: "science manipulates things but refuses to inhabit them." i like that very much, yes.
