Born 1954 Port Chester NY USA
Kate Petley is an artist who uses unusual materials to present a surprising glimpse of light itself. Notable site-specific installations, public commissions, and exquisitely crafted studio works have received awards including an NEA Rockefeller Foundation Grant. Through her use of reflections, Petley’s work exaggerates the subtle optical effects created by light. Petley slows the very act of seeing with lyrical works that express the richness of experience.
Her work has appeared in numerous solo and group exhibitions at such venues as Diverseworks, Houston, the Center for Contemporary Art, Santa Fe, the Museum of the Southwest, Midland, the Martin Museum at Baylor University, the Museum of South Texas, Corpus Christi, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver. She lives and works in rural southwestern Colorado.

| 关于此艺术家 |
Working in a broad range of materials, I create special effects that ask the viewer to examine the details of ordinary existence. My work often amplifies the profound attributes of light.
My new resin-based panels combine photographic films derived from reflected light patterns, transparencies, and hand-drawn elements.
The resulting objects hover in front of the walls. Relying upon the fundamental properties of light, I’m making an object that appears to be a flat screen, generating its own imagery.
In sculpture and installations, I look for methods of working that allow me to freeze tiny moments that feel larger than their circumstances indicate.
