Overcoming
2004 Acrylic on Canvas & Embroidery Thread H 76.5 by W61.5cm |
|
The first layer of the piece is of unstructured bright acrylic colours.
Masking tape was then placed, so that when the second layer was painted
on top, the first layer would be revealed by taking it off. The second
later is in black and white of a woman. The canvas was then cut into and
certain areas were sown up.
The painting represents human emotions. The black and white painting of
the face, represents the darker side of human emotion, all the negative
experiences. The first layer represents the brighter side of human
emotion. The part that can be damaged and ruined through the dark. Like
a childs lost innocence and naivity. Once its gone it can be hard to to
find. The cuts represents ones personal experiences of bad, the worse
the slits the more painful the experience. By sewing up these cuts the
canvas represents human streinght and power in overcoming these
problems. Which is also represented by the colours of the thread that
are used to sew the canvas with.

Thoughts
2006 Pencil & Biro on paper H 30 by W 30cm |
|
I drew a portrait, and when I felt angry I wrote some of the words that came to my mind. By reading the words over and over again, I hope that the viewer gets infused emotionally in the thoughts that were experienced. That the piece provides a window or a portal into my emotional state at the time. |
