I began working in tempered glass about 13 years ago when my car window was smashed outside my apartment in Boston. I had been expecting this day. Every morning I stepped over a fresh pile of someone elses window remnants, hardly giving it a thought. Strangely, the fact that I was the victim this time made my own personal pile of glass look quite brilliant and hopeful. I gathered and saved the pieces and eventually made a vase.
This project so inspired me that I went on to develop and invent a technique for working with vandalized window shards.
I have spent the years since exploring ways to make smashed, tempered glass into my own medium. I was especially drawn to the challenge of creating with such a random and unpredictable material.

| 关于此艺术家 |
I mainly work in smashed glass and appliances and other random objects. I am convinced that the objects and appliances that show up at my door( as this is how I come to get them)come with the secrets of their past lives as voyeurs in other households.
I give them a transformation using smashed glass because of its symbolism of past lives, shattered selves, and accidental transformations. I use patterns reminiscent of people I have known or places I have been. Some of the patterns are bookmarks to other eras. |

Sel Portrait:Fridge
2004 63.5 x 137.2 x 58.4 |
|
This is a self-potrait of me as a fridge from my grandmother's house made with found fridge and glass. The glass was stained by hand and then smahed and glued. Then grout was applied between the shards of glass. |

This is a recreation of my grandfather's scotch plaid cooler which he took with us on every camping trip. |

Mailbox
2004 33 x 142.2 |
|
This is an homage to all the secrets the mailbox once held and also the effects of the years of weather and exposure. As you bend over slightly to peer inside, you are startled by an image of yourself reflected in a mirror affixed to the deepest reaches of the mailbox, perhaps signifying the futility of man as he looks for something, anything, in his mailbox. |
Morning Glory Fridge
2005 81.3 x 152. 4 x 53.3 |
|
This fridge was a gift from Charles Weyerhausr who owns the Art Complex Museum. It was his childhood fridge. I imagined a childhood of morning glories and vines and so I upholstered this fridge with morning glories. |
Narcissivision
2005 53.3 x 53.3 x 45.7 |
|
This fridge was found outside my studio door. I don't have a television so often I stare at this one for a bit. Inside is a neon halo and a mirror so the halo reflects indefinitely. |
The Truth Bidet (of Narcissus)
2006 Actual bidet size |
|
Narcissim is a concept that has been recurring in my life. When asked to exhibit recently at a new gallery in provincetown the idea of a bidet came immediately to mind. The bowl is covered with two-way mirror glass which might seem covert perhaps and yet which is reflective. I imagine Narcissus trying to find his reflection in his bidet and so the outside is covered with abstract paperwhite and red narcissus flower shapes.
The truth neon appeared at my door part way thorugh this project and so it came, "The Truth Bidet". Somehow the bidet conjured up the truth neon. |
