Carol Mc Donnell

关于此艺术家

Born 1962, Widnes, UK

"I'm a painter and surfer, in varying percentages, depending on the light, the tide, the time of day...I'm a Zen Buddhist all day long..."

Named Carol McDonnell, but friends call me Blue, so call me Blue. I also have the name Chondzin [meaning 'Holder of Dharma'], a Buddhist name granted to me by the Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso in 2003.

"Described recently in a review as an "artist, surfer and groovy spiritual being"...my hope is to bring soul and a sense of peace to my work, and to share that moment with others."

Originally a photographer, graphic designer, art director and lecturer in multimedia, I now work full time as a painter, since 2004. I work primarily in watermedia, specifically watercolour, gouache, ink and acrylic. I experiment and push the boundaries of these media, and am particularly exploring the nature of the brush, through developing my own brushes. As a watermedia painter, I donate from my work to the WaterAid charity, in order to help those for whom water is not so freely available. I will be holding a series of painting workshops in 2007.

My paintings explore the essence of things, universal concepts. I try to strip away all but the essential in my work. I paint my own form of minimal expressionism. Also a trainee Zen calligrapher, I try to bring elements of this into my painting, the two approaches frequently come together in pieces I create. I am also a trainee haiku poet, which relates strongly to my painting, in that I also produce 'visual haiku', and am somewhat of a specialist in this field.

Inspired by the painters Kazuaki Tanahashi, Mark Rothko, Robert Motherwell, Neil Canning, I particularly find inspiration in Japanese art, calligraphy, Zen, and Abstract Expressionism.

'completing the circle'

2006
12 x 7.5 cm

Zen Buddhist icon, the Enso, acrylic and gesso on driftwood construction.

'one stroke meditation'

2006
: gouache | cartridge paper :
19.5 x 8 cm

The one stroke painting. The ultimate minimalism, the essence of the brush, the essence of the subject. No two strokes will be alike.

'enso 01'

2006
: gouache | cartridge paper :
19.5 x 19.5 cm

It is believed by many that the character of the artist is fully exposed in how he draws Enso, and that only one who is mentally and spiritually whole can draw a true Enso.

'horizon of colours'

2006
: watercolour | gesso | 300gsm paper :
30 x 30 cm

meditating on horizons...this gives me the clearest view of all, and this series of works are very close to my heart. I love nothing more than to strip a view, or an experience down to it's essentials, creating an 'essence' of place...

'horizon'

2006
: oil | oil bar | acrylic gesso | acrylic matte gel | coarse marble dust | canvas :
12.8 x 12.8 cm

Another exploration from my 'horizons' series.

'carn brow'

2005
: watercolour / 160gsm cartridge :
17 x 17 cm

A watercolour painting from my 'visual haiku' series, as featured in First Point Magazine 2005. In this painting lie the roots of the more recent 'horizons' and 'one stroke' series.

'torrent'

2005
: watercolour / graphite / 160gsm cartridge :
17 x 17 cm

Another visual haiku painting...inspired by driving rain that came through from the Atlantic. Despite the beauty and light of Cornwall, the passion that a good rainstorm, a good squall can bring to my heart, exceeds all...
