Although I have no formal training in the arts, my lifelong love of colour, texture and especially design have always kept the creative juices flowing - in fact there are always far too many new projects to start than there is time! I am never happier than working in my studio (although working in my garden comes a very close second) and the thrill of a new project can sometimes see me working well into the night.
I first got involved with Papier Mache about 10 years ago and it still amazes me now what can be achieved with a load of soggy newspaper. Papier Mache is a very old art form that has certainly stood the test of time. When used in pulp form it is as pliable as clay, almost as tough as concrete, but still lightweight and strong and, if properly sealed, will last a lifetime.
In my opinion this is true "wall sculpture", not just a few squiggles of paint on canvas. So many effects can be created just by altering the "receipe" slightly, i.e. adding less/more water or drying quickly in the sun/leaving to dry naturally, even using different papers or a combination of all the above can create a different texture every time.
As an artist, this method of artwork also satisfies my soul because of its greeness. What could be a better way to recycle than turning landfill into art!
Over the last year I have been experimenting by adding cement to the paper pulp so I can produce outdoor sculptures and this method has proved to be a great success. |

FAULTLINE
2006 153.7cm W x 58.7cm H x 14cm D |
|
This sculpture was inspired by the San Andreas Fault, California, USA, which has always fascinated me. The heavy texture and undulation of the sculpture clearly captures the earth's movement and is even more heightened by the use of vibrant and metallic colours. |
BIG BANG
2006 4 Canvasses each measuring 42cm W x 42cm H x 3.8cm D |
|
This is my interpretation of how the cosmos originated.
This sculpture is made up of 4 chunky canvasses.
The design is gradually built up using commercial paper towel which has been twisted and then soaked to form the higly textured surface. It is then left to dry, usually for a week or more if the ambient temperature is low or, as in this case, the texturing is very thick. Layers of professional quality acrylic paints are then applied with two coats of varnish to preserve this beautiful work of art.
The sides are textured and painted, so there is no need to frame and therefore ready to hang straightaway.
Paynes grey, Vermilion Hue (red), orange and yellow.

FLAMING JUNE
2005 51cm W x 76cm H x 3.8cm D |
|
This sculpture was inspired by the lupins growing in my garden.
Using a triple primed Loxley professional canvas a layer of tissue paper is layered over the entire surface (including the sides), which is then manipulated to form a heavily textured effect. The lupins, made out of paper pulp, are then applied and sculpted. The whole sculpture is then left to dry, usually for a week or more if the ambient temperature is low or the pulp is very thick. It is then sealed again before being layered with professional quality acrylic paints, two coats of varnish are then applied to preserve this beautiful work of art.
The sides are textured and painted, so there is no need to frame and therefore ready to hang straightaway.
Red and orange hues, washed with hand-mixed metallics. The lupins in gold and old gold.

SINAI STRATA
2005 3 Canvasses each measuring 18 |
|
This sculpture was inspired by trip to the Red Sea, Egypt driving through the Sinai Mountains at Sunset. The heavy texture and vibrant colours reflect this mood perfectly.
This sculpture is made up of 3 professional Loxley chunky canvasses.
The design is gradually built up using paper pulp, which is moulded freehand with added sections of tissue papers. The pulp is then left to dry, usually for a week or more if the ambient temperature is low or, as in this case, the pulp is very thick. It is then sealed again before being layered with professional quality acrylic paints, two coats of varnish are then applied to preserve this beautiful work of art.

Bronze, yellow ochre, burnt sienna, pewter, brushed with hand-mixed metallics and mica |
SINAI GOLD
2005 122cm W x 30.5cm H x 3cm D |
|
This sculpture was inspired by trip to the Red Sea, Egypt driving through the Sinai Mountains at Sunset. The heavy texture and vibrant colours reflect this mood perfectly.
Firstly I make the support using MDF screwed onto a softwood frame which is then primed twice to seal the porous surface.
I then cover the whole surface with a layer of tissue paper which is carefully manipulated to form deep texture. The paper pulp is then prepared and sculpted to form the rest of the desgin freehand. The whole sculpture is then left to dry, usually for a week or more if the ambient temperature is low or, as in this case, the pulp is very thick. It is then sealed again before being layered with professional quality acrylic paints, two coats of varnish are then applied to preserve this beautiful work of art.
The sides are textured and painted, so there is no need to frame and therefore ready to hang straightaway.
Red and orange hues, umbers (browns) pewter and hand-mixed metallics. Liquid gold leaf has been used for the smooth vein running through the centre. |
FIIREBOWL
2006 83.5cm W x 28cm H. Base 26.7cm)diameter |
|
I stapled chicken wire to a base of MDF and moulded this freehand. The whole armature was then covered with strips of newspaper. Once dry, a thick layer of paper pulp was added to the entire surface and again left to dry, usually for a week or more if the ambient temperature is low or the pulp is very thick.
Once dry, the pot is then sealed before being layered with professional quality acrylic paints, two coats of varnish are then applied to preserve this beautiful work of art.
Warm reds and browns, washed with copper, bronze and gold leaf. |
AMMONITES
2006 43 cm W x 40 cm H x 13 cm D (Large) |
|
The ammonites are made entirely of the Daily Telegraph. The armature was made of carefully coiled soaked newspaper, each layer left to dry before starting the next. Once the armature was completed this was then covered in paper pulp.
The colour is intentionally painted to look as naturalistic as possible. |
BOUDOIR BABE
2006 165 cms H. Hip 96 cms - Bust 94 cmc |
|
I rescued this mannequin from ebay and, in a true recycling manner, decided to give her a glamorous makeover. I firstly elongated the torso in the antique french style and then fashioned her clothes in paper pulp. She is painted in 4 different shades of gold and the raised detailing has been painted in platinum. |
