| 关于此艺术家 |
I am a sailor and an artist. My work is inspired by nature and is expressionist in style.
In the summer I spend as much time as possible painting from a sailboat anchored in distant bays of Maine. I try to communicate what it is about the place and time that excites me.
My painting is not realistic in the sense that you can recognize where I put my easel. I seek to express something of the spirit of a place.
Making a painting is bringing a child into the world. The painting has its own personality and appearance determined by the mysteries of inheritance and chance. The artist should accept rather than control this offspring. The artist has the opportunity to help the developing painting find its own way and realize its own potential. I feel that the demands of consistency (from galleries and critics) should not compel a new painting to fall into line. Each child painting is an individual. One may excel in color, another in rythmn and a third may be monumental. Each finds its own way to express its subject and different subjects each call for their own expression.
Color is important to me. When I look at a scene I compose the colors in my mind deciding how to use color in a creative way. From time to time I will match a color to something in the scene but usually I match colors to those I have already on the canvas. Every painting has its own palette matched to the way I feel about it about the subject. In a similar way the composition of the painting evolves using what's in front of me as a source of inspiration. You could pin the label "expressionist"on this process if you like.
I have recently been extending my work to landscapes of New England particularly those I see when hiking or skiing.

Arrival at Seguin Island
2006 81 x 46 |
|
Seguin Island is a couple miles off the coast of Maine, USA at the entrance of the Kennebeck River. It has a lighthouse with a 'fixed' light that does not flash. I visited the island a number of times with my Cape Dory 25 GRACE. The cove is surrounded
by dark high rocks against which the sound of waves echoes at night.
