I have found that for me the most influential painting of the past has been social realism, a movement I find important because of its exploration of ethics. I would categorize my own work, related to this earlier movement, as social and cultural expressionism- an ethical exploration I am attempting to share with the viewer. By presenting a visual text to be shared and contemplated, I am asking for and hopefully requiring the viewer to engage in a dialectic that essentially ‘finishes’ the painting. Much of my work involves human figures and portraiture at this point. This tends, I believe, to help the viewer identify in some fundamental way with the image and somewhat problematizes the ability to distance themselves from the object of the painting. |
