Fiona Long

About the Artist

My art work is all about focusing in on things or looking at them from an unusual angle. I love texture and often mix plant seeds into the paint in my work. I love following journeys and pathways in my work. My artistic journey is a constant progression and I like to depict that in my work.

Bird of Paradise

2006
Oil on canvas
41cm x 41cm

Textural oil on canvas with a palette knife. I loved making pleasing marks whilst painting this and was thinking of a phoenix rising from the flames as it emerged on the canvas.

Tommy Johnson

2006
Oil on canvas
36cmx46cm

This is my portrait of the late, great blues music legend Tommy Johnson. I was commissioned to do this portrait by the Tommy Johnson Foundation. They are having a Tommy Johnson Memorial Festival this October to raise money for a memorial to TJ and road access to the memorial. This painting will be used as publicity material for the festival and will be displayed publicly at The Museum Of Art and History in Jackson, Mississippi (tbc). Tommy Johnson claimed that he sold his soul to a big black man at the crossroads (who people think is the Voodoo god Legba or the devil) in order to play the guitar. There are hints of this tale in the painting. Tommy Johnson’s niece, Vera, who commissioned the piece after putting it to the board has now seen it and said “…I have to tell you the portrait is beautiful it look so real. You are a great artist…” More recently she has said: “I hope you will be pleased to know my Board Members and family think the portrait you’ve done is simply beautiful. They were so happy today when I showed them the copy, You shall be a great artist one day and I’m pleased that Tommy Johnson was done by you. I must thank you again for such a well done job. My heart is full of joy because of you. ”

Up The Skirts Of Liberty

2001
Oil on canvas
68cmx99cm (including frame)

This was painted inspired by the beauty of the huge sweeping folds of metal forming the Statue Of Liberty but there is also a statement in there that most people miss by not noticing her hand......

One Track Mind

2006
Oil and pen on canvas
61cmx51cm

Well, this is a journey through the pathways of the brain but I also must have had sex on the brain when I did this one!

Curled

2006
Pencil on paper
40cmx40cm

I love looking at the internal space within a nude pose and letting the viewer's mind work out the rest with the subtle suggetions that I leave.

Elemental

2006
Oil on canvas
61cmx51cm

This was painted using a technique I developed this summer. It is an abstract image of something specific but everyone sees something different so I prefer to leave it open to interpretation.

Vision Window

1999
Multimedia Installation
120cmx180cm

An exploration of vision this window is collaged with my photographs of eyes, drawings, formulae of the speed of light, refraction diagrams, thesaurus pages for vision, warped photocopies of words about vision, biological diagrams of the eye and more. I love the way it changes depending on the light behind it as different layers appear and dissapear.

Caroline

2006
Oil on canvas
68cmx99cm (including frame)

This was painted from an abstract life drawing. I wanted to use natural earthy tones to represent the elemental nature of woman without representing her in too obvious a way so as to retain her myseriousness. I hand painted this bespoke frame to fit in with the scheme.

Education and biography
I have exhibited at the Mall Galleries and The Menier in London, in Warsaw, Poland and in the New Forest, England. I have a BSc in Psychology and am currently studying a Foundation in Art and Design.

Future shows
My Tommy Johnson portrait is about to be unveiled in Jackson, Mississippi on the press launch of the Tommy Johnson Memorial Festival. The town dignatories will be there and it will be displayed in a public museum.
