My photographs are a group of portraits and landscapes that weave document with narrative. In the series American Exurbia, and Costa del Este I photograph children within their homes. The children are found in communities in newly developed Exurbia, in New Jersey as well as in Panama in Central America. The environments are similar although far apart: new, isolated, protected and homogenous. My subjects are shown as types, and function as characters engaged within environments that have deep impact on their psyche and body. The culture represented is one of anxiety and distancing, and one in conflict with sensuality. My fascination is in the children's sense of their own individuality and body. As a person from an international background, my interest in this developing homogenous culture reflected in the children of Exurbia, is related to my fascination with social experience and cultural context, regionality and globalization in our times. Making these photographs is a process of looking through a window and into a looking glass. |
