Since the Closer Than You Think series of 1998 Mick Finch’s paintings have employed pictorial mechanisms, processes and tropes of abstraction to visually foreground questions of image and signification. Painterly qualities become rhetorical instruments within passages from visibility to effacement, from a tangible materiality to sublimated states. The sense here is of an insidious order of homeless representation. Images and forms, originating from the internet, are integrated into the fabric and the thickness of the paintings through a carefully worked process of projection and transcription. Following on from the Sublimey and Nevermind series, the Prosopopoeia paintings develop qualities that arise from a process of defacement. Images are transcribed into the shallow ground of the painting. Networks of paint drips obscure and throw into relief these images setting up a dense residue of intertwined vestigial forms. |
