Art has been a part of my life since I can remember, from the doodling my mother engaged in while having a conversation on the telephone, to the encouragement of my grade 8 art teacher. I was "side-tracked" in high school by technical draughting, but eventually while being a bored young adult I took evening art classes at the local community college. There I was inspired and encouraged by the recently deceased painter Rosemary Kowalsky to go to University which after the first year lead to attaining degrees in Education (B.Ed.) and Fine Arts (B.F.A. honours). My primary medium of choice is clay, but I am also a strong draughtsperson (drawing). During my B.F.A. studies I completed in one year a major in drawing while engaged in an undergraduate thesis in ceramics.
My current work is primarily influence by a medical condition I was diagnosed with in my early thirties known as Crohn's disease. During that time period I also happened to be planning a trip to Italy to visit my spouse's family and seeing the opportunity I also applied to work with the artist Nino Caruso who unfortunately had other plans. Since I was a successful applicant for a crafts grant from my local arts council he referred me to Pietro Elia Maddelena in Tuscany where I spent the better part of month being absorbed in the ancient culture and it's magnificent landscape seeing through firsthand experience the Renaissance and Medieval art which still influences in s subtle manner. |
