Visual inspiration is found everywhere in life. Common events and sights - such as water flowing over a broken drain field, or textures, lines, and colors in a piece of marble - just simple things sort of click in my brain. There the memory is stored, and eventually is converted into an idea for a painting, or a series of paintings where the idea is further developed and expanded. Each painting in a series takes the ideas to explore it in a different focus. Endless possibilities. Travel also inspires me with many ideas for painting. The amazing variety of sights, cultures, scenery, and lifestyles are a boundless source of motivation. Creative events - such as dance, and music - also fascinate me. |

Poseidon's Rhythm # 3
75.88cm x 96.2cm |
|
I prefer to pursue subjects that can be interpreted many ways, and lead to interesting studies, and series of work. |

Watercolor 94.615cm x 74.93 cm |
|
Watercolor in a series called "Strata" |
Dancers - Triptych
Watercolor 86.36cm x 53.975cm |
|
In my "Dancers" series, I have been exploring different ways to portray the incredible athletic ability of dancers, the expressive energy, and the fascinating inter-connections of the choreography involved in this art form. |
Dancers - Study # 13
Watercolor 40.64cm x 38.735cm |
|
In some pieces I have taken the figures towards abstraction, using line or color to convey the powerful energy in dance. In other work, the forms of the dancers in relationship to the contrast of light areas and dark areas are the focus - examining the effects between performers and light sources such as spotlights, beams, or diffused light. |
Dancers # 4
Watercolor 96.52cm x 77.47cm |
|
A mottled texture provides a foggy, or atmospheric effect within the light. I have used metallic watercolors to indicate light, reflection, and motion. |
Dancers # 8
Watercolor 96.52cm x 77.47cm |
|
Positions of the dancers interest me, as they indicate motion, the tension of activity, as well as the relationships between dancers within a choreographed arrangement. |
Strata # 8
Watercolor 100cm x 79.7cm |
|
One of a series of abstract interpretations and expressions of any sources that are inspirations to visualize or imagine layers. Example: clouds, ocean waves, broken water mains with rushing water, slabs of marble, waterfalls in the woods and mist.... |
Tubab House
Watercolor 80.33cm x 99.38cm |
|
This is from my Africa series. A "Tubab" is the Malian word for a white person. This is an abstract version of the house provided for a Peace Corps trainee volunteer in Mali. They paint them with the blue paint so that the volunteer can find their house among all of the villagers mud huts. |

|
Oil painting: is one of a series of paintings called "Dancers". It is an abstract exploration and expression of the amazing athletic ability and energy involved in dance, as well as the visual relationship choreographed between dancers. |
