My work is dependent on design fundamentals: form, color, and composition. I believe the most complex emotions can be evoked from the simplest of forms. My style explores the relationship between man-made structures and the natural world; the idea of recognizable shapes and structures living within irrational thoughts and emotions. I begin a piece very spontaneously and become more detailed as the composition starts to show itself. The process involves layering. The first layers are the most erratic and freeform, similar to automatic writing. Paint is applied liberally during this time creating thick textures. I sometimes add other elements like pumice, gels, and collage in these early layers. I notice different characters and forms in the middle of the process, which I then nurture and allow to develop almost at their own will. I derive titles in the same spontaneous fashion that the work is created. They are intended to give the painting an identity and character. I believe how the viewer interprets the painting becomes the reality for that person. I would be reluctant to interject another perspective. |

| McNulty received a B.A. in Psychology from St. Johns University, a liberal arts school in Minnesota. He also minored in Art exploring various media including oil, watercolor, sculpture, and animation. After graduating in 1997, he began painting oils on large canvases which has progressed to his current style today. He has reached clients all over the world through his website, shawnmcnulty.com, which receives many visitors every day. McNulty's studio is located in Minneapolis, MN, where he creates and displays the work. He is a founding member of Rosalux Gallery, a cooperative gallery in downtown Minneapolis that has 24 contemporary artists as members. Besides Rosalux, he has exhibited at Buffalo Fish Gallery, St. Paul Art Crawl, Niche 3708 Gallery, Phipps Center for the Arts, and the Chaska Art Center. His work is also featured on the cover of the Southern Review (Spring 2006) and the literary website failbetter.com. | |
